Mention Harry Murray’s name to anyone in the hospitality industry and it’s likely they’ll all come back saying the same thing; what a lovely man he is. With more than five decades of experience in the hotel business, Harry is one of the sector’s leading lights and an inspirational figure; often described as the consummate hotelier because of his attention to detail.
Harry arrived at Lucknam Park, the luxury 42-bedroom hotel near Bath, back in 1997 as managing director with a clear vision to develop the property as the best country house hotel in the UK. In 2005, he was honoured with an MBE for his services to the hospitality industry, and just four years later, progressed from his position as MD to become chairman of Lucknam Park, a career progression well deserved.
Harry’s award-winning streak started way back in 1986, when he was given the title of Hotelier of the Year and then scooped a Lifetime Achievement Award once in 2008 and a second time in 2013, demonstrating his timeless approach to quality, service and standards.
But a bulging awards cabinet isn’t the only reason that Harry makes our list; not only has he been instrumental in building on the five-star reputation of Lucknam Park Hotel during his almost 20-year stint, but Harry has helped develop some of the next generation’s leading hoteliers in the UK and around the world, who have each gone on to cement their own legacy in the industry.
Harry constantly campaigns for excellence, not just at his own hotel, but across the industry and is dedicated to driving forward standards within the whole sector. Whether this is through his involvement as a Master Innholder, with the Institute of Hospitality or St Julian scholarships, he has genuine passion and love for the hotel business. Not bad for a boy who knew he wanted to be the hotelier of a five-star hotel from the age of 13.
